A lot has changed over the years, from technology, social behaviour, right down to service providers.
That has resulted in different skills being required. So here is a look at jobs that didn’t exist 10 years ago:
1. Social media manager
Social media has become an essential tool for many leading brands and has become an important part of our daily lives. We all know that we can not live without it, whether we like it or not. In 2006, Facebook was still pretty new to a majority of its users. Twitter had only just launched and was slowly gaining momentum while Instagram wasn’t even heard of yet.
According, Facebook is the leading social network with 1,8 billion users followed by Whatsapp with 1 billion. With such an increase, no wonder there has been such a large demand for businesses to invest in a social media manager, for advertising, marketing, and engaging the brand with the broader public.
A vlogger is someone who records their ideas, skits, opinions, typically a Youtuber or blogger. Vlogging can now be made into a successful career with YouTubers receiving lots of money through advertising, social media, books and sponsorship deals.
So if it didn’t work 10 years ago, you can give it a try this year.
3. App developer
According to WeForum.org, nearly half the world’s adult population have smartphones after iPhone and Android’s arrival back in 2007 and 2008 respectively.
This means that there will be a growing need to develop apps that will be compatible for smartphones, these include reading apps, diet and heart rate monitoring devices as well as social media network apps.
4. Uber and Taxify Drivers
Not having a car or going out for a night out for drinks has been made simpler by these apps. All you need to do is to insert your location and destination, and a driver will come and pick you up.
How cool is that? That job didn’t exist 10 years ago.
5. SEO specialists
The job title SEO specialist sounds more Jason Bourne than what it is – a position of authority when it comes to optimising a product or service for search trends. These Google pros are hired purely for their ability to get a page in front of you, analysing consumer usage patterns on similar content and coming up with specific words or terms that’ll help prioritise your content over others. In other words: they get stuff higher up in Google.
