Describing herself as a nomad, Nabongo fell in love with Africa during a trip to Uganda when she was 21.

Although it was her hometown and she visited many times, her fascination for the country grew when she turned into an adult.

“As a Ugandan-American, I first travelled to Uganda when I was 6 and again at 12.

During my first two trips I couldn’t see much in Uganda beyond going home to visit family.

However, when I visited Uganda at 21 to do the last rites ceremony for my grandfather, I fell in love with Uganda.

I was able to travel around the country to learn more about the place. Now it has become an absolute great destination,” she said.

She believes that Africa is an attractive destination because of the diversity.

“So many people think of Africa as a monolith, but the 56 countries that make up this gorgeous continent offer many things that you cannot find anywhere in the world and it varies greatly between countries.

“For example, Morocco and Uganda are totally different, as are Tanzania and Senegal.

“From the wildlife to the beaches, to the food, the people, the music and the culture, as a collective, Africa is unlike anywhere else in the world.

“You cannot do a safari anywhere in the world that will compare to what you find in the Serengeti, and Africa is home to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches.

“There is a vibrancy that is found in all of the African countries I have visited which is unmatched,” she said.

Nabongo is passionate about all things African.

A seasoned traveller, she travelled to 75 countries and territories and 35 US states.

Her favourite African destinations include Tanzania, Serengeti and Zanzibar.

She also raves about Dakar, Nairobi and Accra.

Her favourite activity was white rafting on the Nile, which she said “is one of my favourite travel memories”.

On her travel bucket list, she wants to explore southern Africa, including countries like Madagascar, Namibia, Mozambique and Zambia.

“I am really excited to visit these countries and to learn more about it,” she said.
