Traditional PR is dead.

This belief gave Carey Townsend, 33, the motivation to delve into the world of communication and build her own public relations brand. Her company, Girl About Town, started at her kitchen counter.

Today, she works with a dynamic team that is making waves in the youth culture space, focusing on the “image amplification” of fashion and lifestyle brands. Carey has a Media degree, a postgraduate degree in Marketing, and has worked as a fashion editor.

It was that love of media and passion for fashion and design that proved to be the perfect combination for her budding career. Her client list reads like the who’s-who of the South African retail space: Adidas, Levi, and Spree, and top alcohol labels like Bacardi and JC Le Roux.

They are all bolstered by Townsend’s media contacts at leading titles such as GQ South Africa, Marie Claire and Glamour.

For Townsend, there are five essential building blocks of entrepreneurship: organisational skills, ambition, vision, honesty and relevance. “If my team and I are able to hit those targets and make a difference in the lives of the people we’re working with, then we’re winning.”
