Dyan Buis was born with cerebral palsy, and he is a veteran of two Paralympic Games.

The 26-year-old’s Paralympic journey began in 2008, while he was a scholar at Langenhoven High School. He broke the school’s long jump record and was inspired by the Paralympians of that year.

Fast forward to 2012 and his first Paralympics, where he won silver in both the T38 100m and T38 200m while also adding a bronze in the T38 long jump event. Gold may have eluded him in London, but he rectified that in Rio last year when he secured gold in the T38 400m and a bronze in the T38 long jump event.

It’s safe to say that his talent runs deep. When Buis is not training or competing, he is teaching the next generation of South African youngsters to excel in the classroom and life, as a teacher at AF Louw Primary School.

Buis may have succeeded in two Paralympic Games, but this is by no means the end.

With his focus firmly set on the 2018 Commonwealth Games and 2020 Paralympics, Buis’s commitment and track record tell us his medal tally is about to grow.
