Siyavuya Ndimeni is working towards being able to tell South African stories from behind and in front of the camera.

The 23 -year-old Video Technology student at the Durban University of Technology has also become quite popular since he was crowned Mr.DUT this year.

Born in the Eastern Cape Ndimeni said he had never thought that he would end up in Durban but was glad his journey had steered him that way.

“I was in Cape Town modelling and studying science, which I really was not enjoying, so I ended up leaving,”  he said.

Because of not being able to solely focus on modelling he decided to look for university’s where he would be able to study video technology or anything related to video and storytelling. He felt drawn to the course offered in DUT and before he knew it he was in Durban.

Modelling has been a big part of his life with him having been part of advertisements for prominent brands like Levi’s. He also explained that even though he loves modelling he has an interest in knowing how things work behind the camera.

“I love being in front of the camera but at some point, I figured I would like to learn more about being behind the camera too, I wanted to create content and tell some truth,” he said.

Ndimeni described himself as a spiritual being that believes that people nowadays are too focused on having material things rather than taking care of their spirit and mind.

“The mind is a very powerful tool and people are no longer doing things that will feed their minds and souls, its just all about material things,” he said.

He added that during his reign as Mr Dut he hopes that he can encourage others to see that there’s more to life than material things.

Ndimeni is currently doing his first year and he said he is learning a lot and is only prioritizing his education right now because he wants to succeed.

Speaking about his dating life he said he just wanted to focus on other things at the moment, like his studies.

He wants to one day travel the world but first, his goal is to travel Africa.

“I really want to explore Africa. It is such a beautiful country and I would like to see all of it before exploring the rest of the world,” he said.

With regards to his future, Ndimeni said he wanted to be involved in major movies whether it be as a director or conceptualizing scripts.

“I just want to create content that is different and speaks the truth, movies like Avatar and The Revenant were so cool, and they spoke about the environment in a way that if you were not paying attention you would have missed it, I want to tell stories or be a part of work like that,” he said.
