CAPE TOWN – The African National Congress in the Western Cape wished ANC veteran Ahmed Kathrada a joyous and wonderful 87th birthday on Sunday.

“Uncle Kathy has led his life with great honor, loyalty, and love, and not only has this brought great stature to our movement, as his gift of long life would attest, Uncle Kathy has found favour with God and with man,” the ANC said in a statement.

At no time, even at this advanced age, had the ANC called on him and he was not ready to serve.

“Many incidences have tested our unity but he has always told us that ‘we must realise that the fight for non-racialism, equity, and equality is not short-term work but generational work which requires a united effort and a lifetime of commitment’ to which he has been committed to all his life. We promise him that our commitment to unifying our country is unwavering.”

“Thank you Uncle Kathy for your service to the country and to your beloved movement, the African National Congress. We are firm in that, with you as our brightest and shining star to guide us on the way, we will always do right by our people. Happy 87th birthday,” the statement said.
