A weekend of fun and education is scheduled as the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) in partnership with the eThekwini Municipality host the Durban Port Festival this coming weekend.

The festival which is an annual event will begin with an opening ceremony in the form of a parade that is set to start at the Victoria Embankment and head to the festival island.

Nokuzola Nkowane the Acting Port Manager for the Durban Port said this year’s festival was going to be amazing.

With the theme this year being ‘All things Heritage’ she said the festivities would cater to everyone.

“Our port festivals encourage communities to enjoy all the edu-tainment lined up for them, but have the important underlying focus of helping TNPA to raise awareness of the ports including the career and business opportunities they represent,”  said Nkowane.

Ayanda Somagaca the Corporate Affairs Manager for the Durban Port encouraged the youth to take part in the festival.

“There is a lot the youth can learn from the festival and it is important to learn as much as possible about the maritime industry,” she said.

Sail-past and regatta, sea rescue displays, jet-ski demonstrations, and a tugboat dance will be some of the waterside activities included.

On Sunday at 7:00 am there will be a 5km walk/run which people are encouraged to sign up for as soon as possible due to limited space.

Some of the musical talents that will be there include, DJ Happygal, Holly Rey, Junior De Rocka, Clermont Choir, Qadasi, DJ Tira and a lot more.

The festivals lifestyle village will offer food and drinks for all tastes including popular food outlets, food trucks, a Shisanyama, local stall holders, a pop-up gin and wine bar, a sushi bar and a beer garden.

Nkowane stressed that festival goers refrain from bringing their own food and drinks.

“We want to encourage people to support local food outlets so festival goers should not worry about bringing their own food or drinks because the lifestyle village will cater to everyone. All people must bring are their camp chairs and hats,” she said.

Tickets for the festival are available through Computicket at R30 for adults and R15 for students.
