How to go about buying a TV in this era:

The television market is evolving at a remarkable rate. This is due to a number of factors, such as, the development of the “Internet of Things”, PVR and hard drive based devices, web streaming, and the level of sophistication and processing power of the actual hardware.

3D, curved and 4K displays are all the rage, but will any of these hardware developments tick all the boxes for what the South African market wants?

Are these even factors that local buyers are focusing on?

We asked Rob Katzen, of the Teljoy Group – the company that originally brought TV to South Africa – what patterns and factors he has observed that are really influencing people when buying new televisions.

“While there has been much hype about curved and 3D capable TVs, we’ve yet to be convinced that these are seen as being of real value by our consumer base and are here to stay.”

“Rather, we’ve seen increasing demand for Smart sets that can be directly connected to the web. Consumers are also paying attention to display quality as the pricing of 4K units become more reasonable .”

“With the introduction of streaming services in the local marketplace like the international arrival of Netflix and the South African ShowMax, having a Smart TV just makes more sense.”

“In previous years, watching movies and series online was not a viable option as speeds were well below optimal for streaming. But with line speeds now averaging around 2.8MBps, and the expansion of infrastructure to bring fibre to the home, consumers are more interested in compatible screen technology.”

There’s still demand for the previous generation

“Consumers are excited about the developments in the TV segment and the wide range of services available to us locally. That being said, there is still a significant interest in satellite TV with MultiChoice decoders and PVR capability still in demand”.

“A further major drawcard is the fact that the only way in the local market to watch certain premium live sporting events is via a MultiChoice broadcast. In a country like ours that is obsessed with sports, it’s not hard to understand that most will want their TV sets to have a satellite connection for the big game.”

What are the main features you should be looking for?

“We still see most consumers opting for standard screens, but now want USB ports as well. However, there is a definite shift in interest towards Smart TVs and we support this trend”.

“Make sure you purchase the correct size screen for your room, and be careful in selecting a UHD or 4K television unless you have HD connectors or internet capability. Standard satellite is not provided in UHD so if you are using your television mainly for watching DSTV, UHD may be a waste”

“Also make sure that the TV has enough USB ports to support multiple hard drives and USBs devices. There are many things to consider when purchasing a TV set in today’s market, but at the end of the day it’s up to what suits the individual consumers’ needs.”
