Media personlity Somizi Mhlongo is breaking down barriers in a major way.

Bold and unapologetic, the flamboyant radio host proudly announced he has been appointed as the first African male ambassador for global makeup brand, Black Opal.

Black Opal aims to provide advanced skincare and specially formulated beauty products for people of colour, and recognizes the need to continually “evolve” in an increasingly “diverse world.”

Coming off the bat of their complete rebranding and fresh aesthetic, the makeup giants are transforming their image to one that is more inclusive and in line with today’s social climate of breaking down gender norms.

Somizi announed the groundbreaking news on his Instagram stating: 

“Iconic moment. Boundaries have been broken. Ladies and gentlemen I am honoured to announce @blackopalsa personality. The first male to represent a makeup brand. blkopalxsomizi when God shows up. He shows off.”

The cosmetics company also shared the news on their Twitter page, confirming the announcement.


Speaking to SowetanLIVE, head of marketing and PR at Black Opal, Busi Xaba explained why the brand’s partnership with Somizi makes perfect sense.

He said: We chose Somizi because he is confident and lively. He is confident with himself and also confident wearing makeup.

We  wanted to demonstrate that makeup can be worn by anyone, whether you’re a girl or guy, as long as you have fire, he added. 

According to a media release from the company, Somizi has signed a one a year contract and will endorse the company’s makeup product for the duration of that time.

It is evident that a new normal is being established in the makeup and beauty industry and Somizi is bringing it to an African context.
