The teaching of Maths and Science at Mafumbuka High School in Umlazi is receiving a boost with the launch of a fully kitted, state of the art science laboratory.
The lab is the 20th such lab that has been established in South Durban schools by oil giant SAPREF over the years. The company says establishing science labs is part of a broader programme of developing science and engineering skills in learners from neighbouring communities.
The science laboratory project involves converting a classroom into a fully-equipped state of the art science laboratory. This lab is then handed to the school complete with work benches, cupboards, Bunsen burners, science kits and chemicals.
Principal of Mafumbuka High School, Mr. Ngcobo said, “This lab will make all the difference in the teaching and learning of science here at Mafumbuka. Our learners and teachers will now see and touch science equipment and experiments will come alive, thus helping our learners to understand better and to perform better.”
SAPREF Managing Director, Ton Wielerssaid, “The science laboratory initiative supports the quality of learning and teaching. It is part of a wider response by SAPREF to the call to uplift conditions in schools, especially in the area of Maths, Science and Technology”.
This is the 14th school to receive a science laboratory in the Umlazi area. The other 6 are in the neighboring communities of the South Durban Basin.
