JOHANNESBURG – A Pietermaritzburg student came forward and reported a case of sexual assault that occurred while students were being pushed back by police.

This comes after students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal protesting over fees, living conditions and a host of other issues over the past month. The protests resulted in police arresting scores of students, and being accused of brutality by the university students.

Acting Provincial Commissioner for KwaZulu-Natal, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa expressed his concern that certain parties are claiming that police have failed to investigate the alleged rape.

We are committed to dealing firmly with police officers who find themselves guilty of misconduct or crime however, it is impossible to investigate a crime that has not been reported. Until such time that someone comes forward to report a case, we cannot confirm if such an incident did indeed take place,” Langa said.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said that they, however, acknowledge that a case has been made and the matter is currently receiving attention.
