What if the sword chose a queen? That is the big question on Netflix’s upcoming fantasy show, Cursed.

Based on the New York Times bestselling book, Cursed is a re-imagination of the Arthurian legend, told through the eyes of Nimue, a young woman with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake.

Played by Katherine Langford who most might remember from the hit series 13 Reasons Why, the character Nimue is very different from Hannah Baker and will surely be an interesting watch for her fans.

The story takes place after her mother’s death; she finds an unexpected partner in Arthur, a humble mercenary, in a quest to find Merlin and deliver an ancient sword. Over the course of her journey, Nimue will become a symbol of courage and rebellion against the terrifying Red Paladins, and their complicit King Uther.

Cursed is a coming-of-age story whose themes are familiar to our own time: the obliteration of the natural world, religious terror, senseless war, and finding the courage to lead in the face of the impossible.

Starring alongside Langford are Devon Terrell as Arthur and Gustaf Skarsgård as Merlin.

For sci-fi fans there has been no shortage of fantasy tales in the wake of Game of Thrones, and most of those televised epics — like The Witcher and The Letter for the King — have arrived courtesy of Netflix. The 10-episode show joins this list on July 17.
