Kombucha –pronounced kom-boo-chu, is the latest food trend with an overload of health benefits.

With an increased focus on health and well-being, you might want to add kombucha to your vocabulary. Kombucha –pronounced kom-boo-cha, is a unique beverage that carries overall health-enhancing properties.

Kombucha is made by fermenting tea and sugar with a specific culture called a SCOBY. This SCOBY is a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast. Most of the sugar is used by the SCOBY during the fermentation process, making way for a list of health benefits including enhanced digestion, energy and improved skin and hair quality.

KOMBUCHA QUEEN

Cape Town’s own Brewmistress, Meghan Werner, couldn’t find her trusty digestive aid, kombucha, of good quality, or a brewer for that matter, she contacted a friend travelling from America. This was the beginning of her independently-owned, manufacturing company, Theonista – even if she didn’t know it yet.

The name Theonista is inspired by the Greek term “Theobroma,” given to the cocoa tree which means “food of the gods.”

The range consists of three bottle sizes and around 10-12 flavours. The taste can be described as a sweet-tart-tangy-zippy kind, with a light fizz and is best enjoyed cold. The refreshing tea is full of living probiotics, organic enzymes, vitamins and minerals so drink up!
