Drawn by a desire for social justice, Keletso Makofane has focused his considerable talents and intellect on the LGBT community and its challenges.
In 2009 he graduated from The University of Cape Town with a BBusSc Actuarial Science Degree and later obtained a biostatistics degree, as a Fulbright scholar, from Columbia University before contributing to research on the HIV and Law report, as an intern at the UNDP in New York.
He was part of the group that developed a set of ground-breaking guidelines called “Consolidated guidelines on HIV prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care for key populations”. His research and technical assistance to organisations that deliver HIV programmes to men who have sex with men has propelled him into the global public health arena.
It is no wonder that leading organisations like the World Health Organisation (WHO) have sought his advice on HIV issues and even asked him to be part of their Civil Society Reference Group and Key Populations Experts Group. Everything he does is infused with an understanding and compassion that arises from his own experiences as a gay man.
Step by step, he is realising his social justice vision, changing mindsets and finding ways to manage the HIV/Aids epidemic.
