Showmax released its highly anticipated first original telenovela on the platform today, and fans were left wanting more.

After a long wait, The Wife made its official debut on the streaming platform and it is safe to say that fans were impressed.

Even though only 3 episodes were released, the show quickly started trending on social media as fans could not stop talking about the Zulu brothers.

Inspired by Dudu Busani-Dube’s bestseller Hlomu The Wife, the 40-episode first season will tell the story of a journalist Hlomu (Mbalenhle Mavimbela from Skeem Saam) who falls in love with a taxi driver, Mqhele Zulu (Bonko Khoza from Necktie Youtha and Roots), not realising that when you marry a man, you marry his secrets.

The book series took the country by storm, with readers falling in love with the Zulu brothers featured in the series. Thanks to the large following the books have gained in the past couple of years, there are high expectations for the series to be a success.

However, judging from the reactions from the first 3 episodes that were released today, the show is set to be quite a hit.

Showmax has commissioned three seasons of 40 episodes each, inspired by Dudu’s books Hlomu the Wife, Zandile the Resolute, and Naledi His Love respectively.

The books follow the lives of the eight Zulu brothers, a formidable crime family, through the eyes of the wives they marry.

Produced by Stained Glass, The Wife is the eighth South African Showmax Original released in 2021, following on from record breakers like the true-crime phenomenon Devilsdorp and Babes Wodumo and Mampintsha’s reality series Uthando Lodumo to name a few.
