Be it romance, action, comedy or horror, you will recall a specific scene from a movie that marked your childhood years.

I remember watching the horror flick ‘The Ring’ when I was younger, spilling over my coke when I saw a horrific creature crawl up a well and then having to confess to a furious parent, that I disobeyed curfew rules because the trail of ants in the lounge had to be explained.

Some movies no matter how old they are, have a specific magic that has fans referring back to it, time and time again.

These movies will never stop trending.

Let’s face it, everyone has at least one movie that helps them forget about everything else.

It’s just the thrill of repeating your favourite lines along with the characters. You walk away feeling uplifted and better about the world in general.

“Most days, movies become a great way to escape from your reality and live a fantasy for an hour,” says Richelle Neethling (18), a movie buff.

Freudian theory refers to this behaviour as compulsion repetition which is “the desire to return to an earlier state of things.”

A specific movie we have watched, might have been truly enjoyable, so we watch it over and over.

Either way, the memories and the feelings are what we seek to relive and reignite.

Here are the Top 5 movies every South African millennial has watched and enjoyed.

If you haven’t enjoyed it, you need to get your eyes checked:

1. When in Rome {2010}

Starring Kristen Bell as Beth, an ambitious New Yorker who is a workaholic (duh), which basically corrupts her chances of finding that perfect man.

Beth goes to Italy, Rome to see her sister get married to a man and there she finally meets the “one”, which is Nick (Josh Duhamel).

She picks magic coins from a special fountain, but there’s a problem. The coins attract an assortment of odd suitors, including a sausage merchant, a street magician and an artist.

Beth only loves Nick and the men keep ruining her chance of being with the one.

But the dilemma is does Nick really love her back? Or is he just infatuated because of the magic coins?

2. White Chicks {2004}

The Wayan Brothers have an ability to entertain with slapstick comedy that somehow manages to not make you want to grit your teeth in annoyance.

In this film, the brothers are fellow FBI agents Marcus (Marlon Wayans) and Kevin Copeland (Shawn Wayans) who accidentally ruin a drug bust. In an attempt to get back into the good books of their boss they enter into a precarious situation with hilariously dismal results.

Did you Know?

Shawn Wayans took more time with make up than Marlon because he wanted to keep his gold teeth in.

Their winning strategy involves undergoing a major transformation into two white women, the Wilson sisters.

Enough said. Hehe.

3. Rush Hour {1998}

(The entire series is 🔥)

There’s a lot of fighting in the Rush Hour series but it’s not as intense as a Van Damme movie and not as playful as ‘Karate kids’.

China’s martial arts comedian Jackie Chan and America’s funny man Chris Tucker team up in the action packed ‘Rush Hour’. The two charactes come from different cultural backgounds and have major personality differences which makes for great entertainment.

Did you know?

Jackie Chan was almost killed filming the scene where he is almost crushed by metal boxes. They slammed together about a quarter of a second after his head was clear.

4. Lion King {1994}

Hakuna Matata, baby.

If you don’t know the Lion King…

The Lion King is a coming-of-age story as the young Simba, Mufasa’s child grows and matures to a point where he is ready to face his evil uncle Scar who took over his father’s pack.

Did you know?

The Lion King was the first Disney animated film to feature a completely original storyline—that is, one that was not an adaptation of a pre-existing story.

This is one epic movie. Truly one epic movie. It is THE movie to watch of all movies ever. I can’t even…can’t even.

5. Fifty Shades of Grey

Fifty Shades is an American film series that consists of three erotic romantic drama films, based on the Fifty Shades trilogy by English author E. L. James.

Christian Grey never allows women closer to him because of his ‘mysterious’ past. Everything changes when he meets Anastasia Steele sent to interview the billionaire. The college graduate begins a sadomasochistic relationship with the business magnate, Grey.

Did you know?

A women’s charity in the U.K. was so disgusted by the Fifty Shades of Grey that they requested people donate their copies to be burned. Only 24 books were submitted for the bonfire, so they decided to use the pages as toilet paper instead.

Noteworthy line from the movie?

“I don’t make love. I f*@k. Hard.” – Mr Grey
