Be it romance, action, comedy or horror, you will recall a specific scene from a movie that marked your childhood years.

I remember watching the horror flick ‘The Ring’ when I was younger, spilling over my coke when I saw a horrific creature crawl up a well and then having to confess to a furious parent, that I disobeyed curfew rules because the trail of ants in the lounge had to be explained.

Some movies no matter how old they are, have a specific magic that has fans referring back to it, time and time again.

These movies will never stop trending.

Let’s face it, everyone has at least one movie that helps them forget about everything else.

It’s just the thrill of repeating your favourite lines along with the characters. You walk away feeling uplifted and better about the world in general.

“Most days, movies become a great way to escape from your reality and live a fantasy for an hour,” says Richelle Neethling (18), a movie buff.

Freudian theory refers to this behaviour as compulsion repetition which is “the desire to return to an earlier state of things.”

A specific movie we have watched, might have been truly enjoyable, so we watch it over and over.

Either way, the memories and the feelings are what we seek to relive and reignite.

Here are the Top 5 movies every South African millennial has watched and enjoyed.

If you haven’t enjoyed it, you need to get your eyes checked:
