Cheryl Zondi caught the public attention this week when she waived her rights to anonymity and detailed in front of television news cameras how she was sexually assaulted when she was only 14 years old by Nigerian Pastor Timothy Omotoso while a member of his Jesus Dominion International church.

Here are 5 things you need to know about the Omotoso rape trial:

1. Zondi explained why she didn’t dare object to Omotoso’s advances, saying she was shocked and confused and just said to him: “I just have to get used to the way things work in this house.”

2. Zondi said that at the time she thought God would be on Omotoso’s side in committing a sexual assault.

3. The 58-year-old televangelist faces a string of charges including rape, and the alleged trafficking of more than 30 girls and women who were from various branches of his church to a house in Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal.

4. Omotoso’s wife was singled out in the Port Elizabeth High Court on Tuesday when she was reprimanded by Judge Mandela Makaula for interrupting court proceedings while State witness Cheryl Zondi was under cross-examination.

5. Judge Mandela Makaula butted heads with defence attorney Peter Daubermann when her repeatedly asked Zondi why she never told Omotoso to stop raping and sexually assaulting her.
