As of Sunday, the number of confirmed coronavirus (Covid-19) cases in South Africa was 587,345, with 3692 new cases identified. The number of Covid-19-related deaths increased by 162, bringing the total to 11,839, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize said.
The provincial breakdown was as follows:
Eastern Cape – 84,006 (14.3 percent)
Free State – 31,870 (5.4)
Gauteng – 199,635 (34.0)
KwaZulu-Natal – 105,383 (17.9)
Limpopo – 11,573 (2.0)
Mpumalanga – 21,289 (3.6)
North West – 23,250 (4.0)
Northern Cape – 7840 (1.3)
Western Cape – 102,449 (17.4 percent)
Unknown – 50 (0.0)
A total of 3,400,638 tests had been processed to date, of which 22,609 had been conducted since the previous report on Saturday.
“Regrettably, we report a further 162 Covid-19-related deaths – 70 from the Eastern Cape, 27 from Gauteng, 21 from KwaZulu-Natal, six from the Free State, 18 from the North West, and 20 from the Western Cape. This brings the total Covid-19-related cumulative deaths to 11,839. We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased. The recoveries now stand at 472,377, which translates to a recovery rate of 80 percent,” Mkhize said.
