As of Sunday, the number of confirmed coronavirus (Covid-19) cases in South Africa was 511,485, with 8195 new cases identified. The number of Covid-19-related deaths increased by 213, bringing the total to 8366, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize said.
The latest provincial breakdown was as follows:
Eastern Cape – 79,410 (15.5 percent)
Free State – 23,099 (4.5)
Gauteng – 180,532 (35.3)
KwaZulu-Natal – 82,300 (16.1)
Limpopo – 9044 (1.8)
Mpumalanga – 15,120 (3.0)
North West – 19,961 (3.9)
Northern Cape – 5131 (1.0)
Western Cape – 96,838 (18.9 percent)
Unknown – 50 (0.0)
A total of 3,036,779 tests had been processed to date, of which 34,794 had been conducted since the previous report on Saturday.
“Regrettably, we report 213 new Covid-19-related deaths – 25 from the Eastern Cape, 40 from Gauteng, 31 from KwaZulu-Natal, 43 from the Western Cape, 51 from the Free State, and 23 from Limpopo. This brings the cumulative number of deaths to 8366. We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased. The number of recoveries currently stands at 347,227 which translates to a recovery rate of 68 percent,” Mkhize said.
