Durban emergency services have cautioned the public against making hoax calls following a severe storm that struck the eThekwini area on Monday night and continued into Tuesday morning. 

The province’s emergency services also urged residents to avoid travelling by road if possible. 

Robert McKenzie, media liaison officer with KZN Emergency Medical Services, said numerous hoax calls were being made to emergency workers. People were also circulating photos of storm damage that had occurred during other incidents.

“We are already receiving hoax calls, old messages going around, old photos of previous flooding incidents – people are making up a whole stack of hoax calls. We are busy enough as it is, these floods are crazy. Please only broadcast real emergencies,” he said. 

“We need to advise people that there is lots of rain and water out there, especially in the eThekwini area, there is lots of rain and flooding. Please avoid travelling if you possibly can,” said McKenzie. 

Five people had been confirmed dead by early Tuesday morning as several homes collapsed due to the heavy rains and mudslides.
