Kotoka International Airport (KIA) is preparing to resume domestic flights on Friday, May 1, after it was shut down for commercial flights as part of the precautionary measures and directives implemented to help control the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19), according to Daily Graphic.
As part of the preparations, waste management company Zoomlion Ghana Ltd disinfected and fumigated the airport on Tuesday. A similar exercise took place at the Kumasi and Tamale airports, according to the publication.
The disinfection exercise, part of a government contract, was carried out across KIA, including the floors, walls and counters at the three terminals.
Inspecting the work at KIA, Minister of Aviation Joseph Kofi Adda said the exercise was part of the protocols set by President Nana Akufo-Addo’s task force to deal with the Covid-19 situation in the country.
Adda said that after the exercise, the airport company, with the support of port health officials, will make sure that everything that needs to be installed to support the implementation of the protocols will be put in place.
“That is to say all the hand-washing devices, face masks and sanitisers, among other things, should be made available. They will be checked by the airport company and the port health authorities to ensure that they are all in place before we start operating,” he said.
He indicated that the country would resume domestic flights first, adding that in all of Africa, Ghana was the only country that was set to resume flights, so they want to do it well and set an example for other countries to follow.
Ghana lifted its the three-week partial lockdown last week Monday in the major cities.
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has recorded 1,671 cases of the virus in the country, with 188 recoveries and 16 deaths.
