The International Peace Youth Group (IPYG) on Wednesday, called on the current and former presidents of Africa to engage in a roundtable discussion on establishing the culture of peace in South Africa.

The group in a statement on Wednesday said, even though South Africa is not at war, the citizens of the country are crying out for peaceful co-existence in their communities.

“Recently we have watched on the news our very own government official being convicted of assaulting three women as well as his domestic worker. Children and youth on the Cape Flats are living in fear and absolute despair due to uncontrolled gang violence. Taxi wars have claimed 45 people’s lives between April 2018 and June 2018,” IPYG said.

The group said that the increasing culture of violence is causing visible signs of the lack of peace in the nation.

“IPYG has been proactive in creating a culture of peace through initiating peace projects in Southern Africa,” the group added.

They said some of these regions include Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Tanzania, Malawi, Madagascar and the DRC and that they hope to accelerate these projects all across the continent.

The group said their latest campaign is an effort to get the attention of President Cyril Ramaphosa and this with a series of peace letters written and signed by youth, pleading for the president to set a date to meet with IPYG representatives and listen to their solutions for achieving a conflict-free and peaceful Southern Africa.
