JOHANNESBURG – These movies may not be the pinnacle of horror movies, but 2016 is serving up some spine chilling dishes for horror fans.

Here are the best picks for the year 2017:

1. The Conjuring 2

The sequel to the first conjuring movie promises to deliver a more nerve crashing experience to its sequel. Taking place in 1977, paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) travel to London to help a single mother who believes her daughter is possessed by an evil spirit in their home. If you enjoy horror with haunted homes this one is for you.

Rotten Tomatoes says, “The Conjuring 2 can’t help but lose a bit of its predecessor’s chilly sting through familiarity, but what remains is still a superior ghost story told with spine-tingling skill.”

2. Blair Witch

This is the sequel of the original film that pioneered the home video taping subgenre of horror films. In this one, the brother of the girl who went missing in the forest in the first movie, find her video and he gathers a group of friends to investigate the forest that is supposedly haunted by the Blair Witch. It is wise to watch the first film before watching this one to get an idea of the story and the family and how it’s all tied together with this year’s movie.

3. Lights Out

This is probably the most spine-chilling of them all as it deals with childhood innocent experience turned sinister-a haunting imaginary friend called ‘Diana’. Diana stalks the family in the shadows by killing off the father and haunts his son and mother who can no longer sleep and his older step-sister, who also had a terrible experience with the entity. The family then investigate the link between the stepsister and the mother to get rid of Diana for good – if they can keep the lights on, that is.

4. Ouija: Origin of Evil

Pronounced ‘wee-jah’, it’s the game that is favoured by occultists and fans of the paranormal that could be summoning spirits for guidance and answers.

In the film, a widowed mother living in 1960’s run a séance business and play the evil Ouija board which eventually invites spirits into their home (as it would) and possesses their one daughter (as it does). This leaves the family scrambling to save their daughter and send the spirit back. This is the best for anyone who likes see demon-possessed children.
