Social media-obsessed Britons spend more than 20 days a year scrolling through the likes of Facebook and Twitter, research has found.

A study of 2,000 people asked how many minutes they generally spent carrying out different activities online.

The results showed that the average British adult spends 81 minutes a day scrolling through social media – adding up to nearly 21 days a year. Some 83 percent of participants admitted to checking the websites each day.

Meanwhile, 68 percent said they watched TV shows and films online, spending an average of 145 minutes a day doing so, making it the most time-consuming activity. The results found a further 82 percent of participants shopped online every day.

All in all, 95 percent said they used the internet on a daily basis. Londoners spent the most time online, with an average of 151 minutes – more than two and a half hours – used to browse the web each day.

Ana Sowerby, of Coral Casino, which conducted the research, said: ‘The way we spend our free time has changed dramatically over the last ten years.’
