In case you haven’t heard yet, Ultra Violet is having a moment.

The bold purple hue was named Colour of the Year for 2018 by Pantone Colour Institute. According to Pantone, ultra violet is a “dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade”. It communicates “originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking.”

While the blue-based purple shade may seem daunting to wear, it is in fact universally appealing as it stands out on any skin tone. In recent months, we’ve spotted some of the most stylish celebs parading the colour down the red carpet, or incorporating it into their everyday wardrobe.

Not to mention, during the Spring-Summer 2018 fashion cycle, we saw design houses such as Gucci, La Perla and Loewe give us head-turning ultra violet looks that popped on the catwalk. And now that’s it’s been named Colour of the Year, we’ll definitely be seeing more of it in both the high fashion circles and department-store ready-to-wear looks.

In the meantime, here are some ultra violet celeb style looks from which you can draw inspiration, as the colour catapults to become a full-on trend.

Of course the young mogul was way ahead of the curve when she was seen rocking these neon ultra violet thigh-high boots from AMEN Couture early last year.

Experimenting with footwear is a great way to ease into the trend if you’re feeling apprehensive about donning the colour right away. Keep the rest of the look neutral or subtle.

Yaas! Ultra violet is not only reserved for the wardrobe, as our fave fashion blogger proves with this ah-mazing glitter eye-shadow from MAC Cosmetics. Also, it doesn’t hurt if your outfit is matched to your make-up look – if you’re not afraid to stand out in the crowd.

Rihanna was simply adorable when she took a swing at the trend wearing a ruffled tulle creation by British designer Molly Goddard. We love how this lighter shade exudes a vibe that’s sweet and romantic, as opposed to the daring looks of some of the more intense ultra violet tones.

Demi Lovato

Demi was party ready when she rocked this sequined number on new year’s eve. When we say daring, this is exactly what we mean. Hair and makeup on point, that killer bod and a sensual purple that makes the skin pop? The star embodied the “dramatically provocative” description ultra violet has been assigned.

Ciara

Ultra Violet is said to allude to the “mysteries of the cosmos” and Ciara was totally on point when she rocked this futuristic glam (cape and all) to a Hollywood party.

Of course we couldn’t wrap up the list without including an image of Queen Bey looking fierce in her self-made Insta artwork. Beyonce wore this figure-hugging gown that showed off her growing tum soon after she announced she was pregnant with twins.
