If you have a solid skincare routine but your face still isn’t glowing or looking as fresh as you want it to, then maybe you are not cleansing the right way.

The golden rule when it comes to your skin is to be gentle especially around sensitive areas like your eyes.

It will be good for you to take some time and re-evaluate how you cleanse your skin as some of your problems may be caused by excessive scrubbing or not enough cleansing, to name a few.

Here are some common mistakes you might be making when it comes to cleansing your face:

Using regular bar soaps

Regular soaps might work for the rest of your body but they should not be used as face cleansers. This is because they can strip the face of its natural oils, leaving skin feeling tight and drier than before. Soaps will also disturb the pH of your skin which can lead to infections.

Daily exfoliation

As tempting as it might be to exfoliate your skin everyday it will probably cause more harm than good. Over exfoliation will strip the skin of its natural oils, which will lead to skin irritations or breakouts.

Most exfoliating products come with instructions on how often to use them but the safest bet is to limit exfoliating to once every 2-3 days depending on your skins needs.

Using hot water

If you wash your face with overly hot water you might have noticed that your skin is usually dry and tight afterwards because hot water affects your skin tissue. It also sensitizes your skin over time. Rather use lukewarm water to cleanse your face.

Using any cleanser you can find

Even though all cleansers technically do the same thing in the sense that they remove dirt and make-up off your skin, not all cleansers are formulated the same way or with the same ingredients.

It is advised that you look for one that is suited to your skin type and wont leave it dry, over striped or not cleansed at all. Whether you skin is oily, dry or combination your needs are different.

Rubbing your face dry

Aggressively rubbing a dry towel on your face can easily lead to skin irritations because it removes proteins, and fatty acids that protect your skin from such irritations. An alternative is to pat your skin dry after cleansing using a clean towel or a paper towel.

Avoiding these small mistakes in your cleansing routine will lead to great results. Do not forget to moisturise your skin after every wash to maintain your skin goals.
