Say goodbye to awkward unfollows.
Social media dynamic are complicated – you can’t just hit unfollow on your super-sweet IRL friend who happens to be a complete headache online.
Once she’s discovered you’ve done the deed, your daily encounters might turn super awkard. And although you probably won’t get called out on it, it’ll be no secret that you both know that it’s THERE, sitting between your conversations like an elephant in the room.
Most people with an ounce of decency will feel that it’s best to just avoid all that. So instead, they continue to follow that work colleague who’s annoying online, or people they’ve met briefly (who’s lives they aren’t particularly interested in) in fear they might bump into them again, or perhaps that one Aunt who doesn’t really know how Instagram works but is trying get with the times, okay?
Anyway, we all have at least one mutual follower who’s posts we just wish we didn’t have to see – and now you don’t have to!
According to Buzz Feed, Instagram will be introducing a mute function in the coming weeks. Which means you no longer have to see unwanted posts on your timeline – WITHOUT upsetting a friend or aquaintance by unfollowing them.
Is this great news or what?? We think umm, yes.
Similar to Facebook and Twitter, Instagram’s mute function will allow you to choose to mute an entire profile, or perhaps just one post that keeps popping up at the top of your feed.
Instagram has already introduced the option to mute people’s Stories, but this latest update takes the feature up a notch.
To activate this function, tap the three little buttons in the top left hand corner of a post and select “Mute.” You can always unmute them if for some reason you change your mind.

Bare in mind that even though you’ve muted a user, you can still send each other DMs, tag each other posts and visit one another’s profiles, meaning ultimately, they”ll never know and you can mute to your heart’s content.
