Sarah Gilbert is a young fashion designer & makeup artist that plans to make her mark in the fashion industry and stay true to herself.
Sarah’s journey into fashion started when she was 16 years old. She received an opportunity to showcase her swimsuit collection at a Durban High School!

“Growing up I had always had a clear vision of what I wanted to do so I applied myself as much as possible to opportunities that would give me experience,” she said.
The Musgrave based fashion designer studied fashion and textiles at the Durban University of Technology.
She said completing her Btech degree last year taught her a lot about the theoretical side of fashion. She hopes her education and experience will help her achieve her goal of bettering the fashion industry.

The 23-year-old said the only way young fashion designers can cement their place in the fashion industry is by quickly developing their aesthetic or trademark.
“Having something that people know you by, a certain style that they know is yours is very important,” she said.
Her trademark is Post-Apocalypse and she loves designing black clothes.
“I love designing different, black clothes, and pushing the boundaries,” she said.
Staying true to You…
Sarah said having a strong identity and sticking to it is very important for designers.
“Do not look at what others are doing and copy it, rather focus on your own identity and then make sure people know it’s you,” she said.

What makes Sarah different is not only her designs but the fact that she offers makeup services along with her designing skills.
“I offer a full package, a beautiful outfit and I do makeup as well,” she said.
Future plans?
Sarah is currently the retail and local merchandiser for Headwear24.
Two years ago she got the opportunity to showcase her work at the Durban Fashion fair and as she moves forward with her career she looks forward to becoming a Trend broadcaster.
A trend broadcaster develops concepts for companies that will bring it to the forefront of the fashion industry.

Anticipated trends…
This spring Sarah anticipates that floral designs and the colour yellow will take over.

“Yellow was already popular in winter but I think as spring comes people will be in a lot of bright yellows.. yellow is definitely the colour of the year,” she said.
She also anticipates deep teal to be popular this spring.
