Mr MediaX is on an exploration of digital space.

Trained as a fine artist, he cycled through jobs in advertising and online media before focusing on art projects that explore our interactions with, and in, the digital sphere. In 2015, his solo exhibition #Selfie25 showed at the KZNSA Gallery, and Constitutional Hill.

Sponsored by the Nedbank Arts Affinity, and the Arts & Culture Trust, his artworks depicted “25 future icons of South Africa’s digital age”. They included Julius Malema, musician Thandiswa Mazwai and social media star Lesego “Thick Leeyonce” Legobane. Attendees who shared a selfie of themselves with an artwork received a code to access an online, virtual reality walkthrough of the curated exhibition.

It was filmed in the Vukani Museum in his hometown of Eshowe in KZN. Mr MediaX is passionate about collaboration. “As black artists in South Africa, we’re boxed in by stereotypes and expectations. But art is about approaching life differently.”

His latest project, with digital pioneers Regina Kgatle and Vuyi Chaza, is the Mambokadzi playing cards. It reimagines a deck of cards, and presents them as an interactive art piece which explores African cultural symbols alongside modern gaming experiences.

The trio presented the project to the long-running Museums and the Web Conference in the US.
