‘Toni Erdmann’ is an endearing German-Austrian movie about a father trying to reconnect with his workaholic daughter.
The movie is written, directed and co-produced by Maren Ade.
The film was named the best film of 2016 by Sight&Sound.
The drama-comedy begins by highlighting the tension between father and daughter and how their strained relationship unfolds into something truly special.
Usually I avoid movies with subtitles, but fortunately I took the time to watch this film and it just so happens to be one of the most funniest movies I have ever seen.
The top 5 scenes that were truly memorable:
1. Vampire makeup
When the film starts, we’re introduced to Winfried’s love of pranks, theatrics and ‘props’.
Winfried plays a prank on a jittery mailman and goes into detail about his ‘brother’ who ordered the package. Apparently his ‘brother’ just got out of prison, and his reason for being in prison was for planting mail bombs.
Winfried returns as the ‘brother’, his face smacked with weird dark face paint, that makes him look…possessed.
All is well when we find out he was actually working with the school’s drama department, not that he gave the parents any peace of mind.
2. Hiring another daughter
When Winfried told his daughter’s rich client that he hired himself a substitute daughter who cuts his toenails, because his daughter neglects him.
3. Winfried as his altar ego: The slightly clumsy, slightly suave Toni Erdmann
Winfried puts on a wig and surprises his daughter on a night out with her friends, with his brand new identity.
He is no longer her father, but a wealthy life coach with long darker hair and a penchant for grating cheese on his head in public.

4. The Handcuff stunt
Toni pulls a stunt and handcuffs himself to his daughter and when the joke’s no longer funny, he can’t seem to find the key.
Not really ideal bonding time when your daughter wants to explode with anger.
5. Sex that is from a different planet
So this was probably the funniest sex scene I have ever seen!
Vanilla sex was apparently too boring, so she decided to have some ‘fun’ with food.
You will understand the cupcake joke once you watch the movie 😉
