The executive committee of senate (Senex) at the violence-plagued Durban University of Technology said it has agreed to a recommendation from the Student Representative Council (SRC) to resume lectures on Monday.
On Wednesday Senex said it had discussed the SRC’s proposal and agreed that the academic programme will resume on Monday. Each faculty and academic department will implement a catch-up programme, taking into account the time lost.
“The university appreciates the patience and understanding from staff, students, parents and guardians following the tragic events that unfolded over the last week,” senior director of corporate affairs at DUT Alan Khan said.
A 20-year-old Durban University of Technology (DUT) student, Mlungisi Madonsela, was shot dead, allegedly during a scuffle with a private security guard near an administration building at the Steve Biko campus last week.
The incident took place amid violence linked to a “total shutdown” protest at several university campuses in KwaZulu-Natal as students protested funding delays with the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and delayed registration processes.
