The countdown has begun for the next national elections in South Africa which will take place on May 8.

Young people, who form the majority segment of the country’s population, hold the key over the future and the type of government that presides over the country.

That is all the more reason why young people who have registered to vote should flock in their numbers to the polls come May 8, 2019.

In the 25 years of democracy in South Africa, young people have been sluggish when it comes to voting.

Here are 5 reasons why young people should vote:

  • Young voters have the power to improve the political future for the better. Young people should mobilise their peers in communities and social media platforms to push the youth agenda.
  • Youths voting for politicians who represent their interests can heavily impact the resulting legislation on issues such as crime, unemployment, gender-based violence, corruption and gangsterism.
  • Key issues in every election increasingly relate to the concerns of students and professionals between the ages of 18 and 29, making it essential for members within that age group to educate themselves on political issues and take to the polls. • Every vote counts. To strengthen South Africa’s position as a capable State there is no room for apathy.
  • Young people are hardest hit by the economic challenges the country faces.
