The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) student wing has won a hotly-contested Students Representatives Council (SRC) election at the University of Witwatersrand with a landmark 12 out of 15 seats.

This is the first time that the EFF Student Command (EFFSC) claims victory in SRC elections at the prestigious university. The EFFSC takes over the running of the SRC from the ANC-aligned Progressive Youth Alliance.

The SRC polls were conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday. The results were announced late on Thursday.

“It is with great joy to announce that we have won 12 of the 15 SRC seats. Wits is ready for an EFF lead SRC,” EFFSC said in a statement.

EFF national leaders, including party president, Julius Malema, and his deputy, Floyd Shivambu, as well as party spokesperson, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, congratulated the victorious Wits student members.

In May the EFFSC won the SRC polls at the University of Cape Town. Earlier this month the EFFSC also claimed victory in SRC elections at the Vaal University of Technology Vanderbijlpark.
