JOHANNESBURG – Spring is here and pollen is in the air. Hayfever and sinusitis is enough to spoil anyone’s day as many people suffer from it on a daily basis. Sinus infections could become very painful after a while and eventually gives off flu like symptoms.

You could go to the pharmacist and get some sinus relief medication, but this gets extremely expensive. These things have a way of creeping on you, according to its best to keep it affordable and less medicated.

Here are some remedies that you could try at home:

1. Stay hydrated
Drinking warm drinks like sports drinks contains electrolytes, proteins, sugars, vitamins and minerals. This helps your body flush unwanted toxins as it reduces blockage of your nasal passage by thinning the mucus.

2. Salt water rinse
Get a Neti pot that allows you to drain unwanted mucus and dust particles. A Neti pot looks like a really old tea pot that your grandmother would keep, with a small snout on the one side. You mix some lukewarm water with salt, tilt your head to one side and pour the solution into one nostril at a time. This helps relieve you from sniffing and sneezing.

3. Steam inhalation
Use a few drops of Eucalyptus or Peppermint oil in hot water, put your face down over the water, drape a towel over the back of your head and inhale the steam for ten sessions twice a day.

4. Pressure point activation
For a blocked nasal passage, a temporary method of relief is to massage your face.

5. Dissolve excess mucus
Eating Spicy foods such as cayenne pepper and fresh peppers, this promotes drainage of stubborn mucus.

6. Creating your own elixir
Drink some warm water, mixed with apple cider vinegar and lemon juice. This method relieves the sinus infection after a few cups.
