JOHANNESBURG – Arthritis is a disease that can affect the joints, muscles and other soft tissues as there are over 100 types of the disease and related conditions.  Yesterday (October 12th) marked World Arthritis Day. It was brought about by the Arthritis Foundation to encourage policymakers to help lower the burden of those suffering from arthritis all over the world.

This year’s theme “it’s in your hands, take action” aims to grow support and raise awareness not only of this condition, but other conditions including rheumatic and musculoskeletal disease and how it affects the lives of those that suffer with it.

Many people associate this condition with the elderly and the health concerns that affect them. But there’s an often forgotten section of people who are young – almost 30% of all sufferers are under the age of 65 years, some are even in their teen years.
World Arthritis Day is a great time to get out and lend a helping hand to those suffering from this condition. Educate yourself on this condition, and find ways you can help prevent or hold-off this condition in your own life such as:

Finding out the best foods that prevent arthritis, from certain types of fish that are packed with inflammation-fighting omega-3 fatty acids, as well as soy beans and cherries among many other foods. As well as supplements and exercise.
