Cape Town Metro police and traffic services have arrested 73 suspects during a crime crackdown in recent days.
The City said in a statement on Monday that the K9 unit reacted to a shooting in Matilda Road in Manenberg which was recorded by the shotspotter system during the early hours of Thursday 11 August.
“When conducting an investigation, the officers saw two suspects who ran when seeing them. One of the suspects was found at a closeby house where a 9mm firearm, 64 rounds of ammunition and one firearm magazine was discovered on the property.
Further investigations led to the arrest of six more suspects, between the ages 19 and 36.
Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith said: “These are good arrests and I commend the staff for their quick responses and vigilance. This is also testament to the capabilities of the Shotspotter system.”
The shotspotter system is an electronic surveillance or detection system which records gunfire and is able to direct law enforcement to the scene of a shooting.
Elsewhere, in Belville South, Hanover Park and Manenberg, 12 more suspects were arrested for the possession of various quantities of drugs and almost 150 cartons of illegal cigarettes was also
confiscated.
In Sea Point and the Cape Town CBD, metro police arrested seven motorists for drunk driving, while a total of 516 fines were issued. Sixteen sedan taxis were also impounded and another 47 more suspects arrested by the city’s traffic services department on drunk driving or reckless and negligent driving.
The City said there a number of arrests in Atlantis, Eerste River, Bothasig, Bellville and Mitchells Plain.
