The self-proclaimed “Kasi Mlungu” has been receiving backlash from social media users about her “blackness”, despite her being white.

Anita Ronge (26), who is popularly known as the Kasi Mlungu or The DuchAz has been a part of heated debates on whether the colour of your skin is the only distinguishing factor of being black.

The house DJ, set Twitter ablaze when she posted photos of herself clothed in African traditional wear.

While many applauded her, others seemed like they were unimpressed with her claim to “blackness”.

They labelled the act as cultural appropriation of black culture.

Ronge has been at the top of the trends of late and has appeared in back-to-back interviews based on her public persona.

Despite the social media backlash, the DJ from East Rand, still maintains her public persona on being a “kasi mlungu” – a white, township girl.

She posted a picture of herself on Twitter holding a broom made out of grass – “I get rejected for not being black enough and being too black to be white … I’m #KasiMlungu & I’m proud.”

She posted the same photo on Instagram with a more elaborate caption it: “I get rejected for not being “black enough” and being “too black” to be white… it doesn’t matter what they say though cause I have found my purpose in life and they can’t say the same. I am #KasiMlungu and I am proud” said.

Whether you agree with her persona or not, one thing for sure is that she stirred up Twitter & Instagram and evoked transformative conversations around culture appropriation.
