JOHANNESBURG – The KwaZulu-Natal police have warned liquor outlet owners to be aware of the liquor license renewal scams taking place in the province.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said that a Ladysmith liquor outlet owner has alerted the police about the incident.

“The owner of the liquor outlet received an SMS requesting that he make a deposit of R250 for the renewal of the liquor licence. However, after verifying with the National Liquor Board, he discovered that the bank details provided in the SMS were not that of the Liquor Authority.”

Zwane urges people to first verify the bank details after receiving such SMS scams before handing over any money and to ensure that they contact the Liquor Authority in order to verify the contents of the SMS.
