The University of Johannesburg said that the subjects it offers had been recognised in the Top 400 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS).

This was released by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, giving its global stature and academic robustness a significant boost.

“Shanghai Ranking’s GRAS is one of the most prestigious global subject ranking systems in the world which uses only externally accessed, objective measures in its assessment of university performance,” it said.

“It is a ranking system that is heavily focused on research quality, impact, and collaboration.”

More than 1,600 institutions from 83 countries were evaluated across 54 subjects in five broad areas, namely natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences.

UJ said its Hospitality & Tourism Management department was ranked 20th in the world, a climb of 14 places from last year.

It also excelled in sociology, where it was in the top 150 in the world, the only South African university ranked, as well as communication, political sciences, earth sciences, education and physics.

“These results are yet another important endorsement of UJ’s growing international reputation,” principal and vice-chancellor Professor Tshilidzi Marwala said.
