NEW YORK – Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, who appears to be on the edge of defeat, remains defiant, her campaign chairman says.

“She is not done yet,” John Podesta told cheering supporters waiting long after midnight in a New York convention centre.

Clinton trailed Republican nominee Donald Trump by 247-215 in the state-by-state electoral vote. The winner needs 270 for a majority, with seven states yet to be projected.

“It’s been a long night, and it’s been a long campaign, but we can wait a little longer, can’t we?” Podesta asked, before urging supporters to go home.

The Clinton campaign “will have more to say tomorrow,” he said. “Let’s get those votes counted, and lets bring this home.”
