DURBAN – The 2016 MTN8 finals is announced, this after Mamelodi Sundowns booked their place in the finals yesterday.

Sundowns walked away with a 1-0 win against Chippa United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium last night. Anthony Laffor decided to send his team to the final when he scored a goal in the 75th minute and helped Downs reach the finals for the first time in eight years.

Mamelodi Sundowns will have to impress the fans as they also gave themselves a chance to win the trophy after they have managed to beat Chippa United 1-0 in the semi-finals and 3-1 against SuperSport United in the quarter-finals.

Bidvest Wits have only reached the semi-finals in the MTN8 competition in their last two campaigns – in 2014/2015 season against Orlando Pirates and in the 2015/2016 season against Ajax Cape Town. This year they have a chance to claim glory after they have managed to beat Cape Town City in the two-leg semi-finals winning 3-0 in the first round.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) together with sponsors, MTN announced that the finals will take place on Saturday October 1st at Mbombela Stadium at 5pm.

The PSL acting CEO, Mato Madlala said she was expecting the people of Mpumalanga and other surrounding areas to rally behind the event.

“As the League, it is in our interest to ensure that we spread football to different parts of the country to give our supporters an opportunity to watch Cup finals and we are excited to announce that Mbombela Stadium will host this season’s MTN8 final” says Madlala.
