Durban-based art illustrator, poet and blogger Sinomonde Ngwane has immersed herself in the creative world, with extraordinary results.

If you’re an art fan, you may have encountered her adult colouring book, Reasons to Smile. It was created in collaboration with English illustrator, Jodie Goolding. In May 2017, the 21-yearold featured on BBC Africa’s Africa Business Report for this collaborative piece of “practical art”.

Ngwane believes in giving back. As part of Book Dash – an NGO that creates free, open source children’s books – Ngwane’s work featured in the Nal’ibali multilingual reading supplement, in partnership with Times Media. In 2016, Ngwane was the Logico Creative Solution’s bursary winner, awarded for her creative prowess.

In February 2017 she was chosen to be part of a panel of illustrators on graphic novels at the Open Plan Studio. It was hosted by Creative Nestlings, in partnership with the British Council Connect ZA. The event focused on teaching community members and volunteers how to use illustration as a tool to tell a visual narrative.

“I want to use my art to connect with people, to create change in the community, and I want to add to the body of work that is created by black people and people of colour.”

We’re inspired.
